1. Prep Your Surface
Stencils can be done on a wide variety of surfaces like walls, floors, tiles, furniture, paper, textiles. By not preparing the surface beforehand you run the risk of a failed project. For best results, make sure that whatever you're stenciling on is clean and dry before beginning your project.
2. Choose the Type of Paint to Use
The surface that you choose to stencil on will determine the type of paint to use. Acrylic paints are versatile and should work well for most projects. Other painting options are chalk paint, ink, and others.
Make sure the chosen paint will stand up to weather conditions if the project is for outside.
3. Place and Attach Your Stencil
Determine the exact place of the stencil, then stabilize it on the surface. Use a ruler if needed. Use painter's tape or spray adhesive so it doesn't move. The spray adhesive will keep your stencil completely flat and minimize paint bleed.
4. Apply Your Paint
Use specific paintbrushes as stipple brushes, dabbers, foam rollers, sponges, or spray cans. Choose it depending on the project. Apply paint at the edges of the stencil and work towards the center with a slight up-and-down motion. Avoid using side-to-side movement or pressing too firm. This will cause a bleed. The most exciting part is the finish, but DO NOT peek to see. Wait a few minutes for the paint to dry, then hold on to one corner of the stencil and slowly pull it up and across to the other side. And that's it - the special feeling of creating your own piece of art!
